{"id":391,"date":"2018-11-14T04:13:58","date_gmt":"2018-11-14T04:13:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/sirowenglenn.com\/?p=391"},"modified":"2019-01-14T23:05:07","modified_gmt":"2019-01-14T23:05:07","slug":"owen-glenn-provides-major-grant-for-liver-cancer-research","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/sirowenglenn.com\/2018\/11\/owen-glenn-provides-major-grant-for-liver-cancer-research\/","title":{"rendered":"Owen Glenn Provides Major Grant for Liver Cancer Research"},"content":{"rendered":"\r\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Philanthropist Sir Owen Glenn has donated $3 million for research to be led by UNSW academics at the Microbiome Research Centre, based at St George Hospital.<\/strong><\/h4>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>A major liver cancer research program, led by Australia\u2019s first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.stgeorgemrf.com.au\/mrc\/\">Microbiome Research Centre<\/a>, has received a $3 million grant from philanthropist Sir Owen Glenn.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The program will study the links between gut health and liver cancer, optimising treatment options and examining the possible impact of the microbiome on the body\u2019s immunotherapy response to cancer.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The Microbiome Research Centre is a collaboration between the St George and Sutherland Medical Research Foundation, UNSW Sydney and the South Eastern Sydney Local Health District.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The MRC is located at UNSW Medicine&#8217;s St George &amp; Sutherland Clinical School, based at St George Hospital. Led by UNSW Professor of Medicine Emad El-Omar, the Centre brings together scientists and clinicians on one campus to support research programs to examine the microbiome\u2019s impact on obesity, diabetes, foetal health, allergies and cancer.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>\u201cBy investing in liver cancer research, I hope we can find better, more effective ways of treating this disease \u2013 and preventing it all together,\u201d said Sir Owen, one of New Zealand&#8217;s most successful entrepreneurs who has donated millions to charitable causes around the world.
